PEDIATRIC MS

Many people with multiple sclerosis are heat sensitive. MS research has proven that heat and humidity often aggravate common MS symptoms. MS research has also proven that cooling the body can help lessen the negative effects of heat and humidity on a person with MS.

Polar Products is a proud supplier for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America Cooling Program that offers cooling vests and accessories for adults with multiple sclerosis as well as children diagnosed with pediatric MS.

The children’s cooling vests are designed to fit children and pre-teens up to 100 lbs.
(Teens should apply for the MSAA Adult Cooling Program.) Rather than using ice packs which freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, a children’s cooling vest uses ice packs that freeze solid at a moderate, safe temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit. These cooling packs release their cooling energy at this consistent and comfortable temperature for up to three hours. They can be frozen in a freezer, refrigerator or cooler of ice water. Packs are non-toxic and non-flammable.

NASA / MS

All circulating cooling systems started with NASA

From MSAA’s “Multiple Sclerosis and Cooling, Third Edition:
http://www.mymsaa.org/publications/cooling/#space

Space Technology Refines Cooling
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) developed space suits to protect astronauts from the hazards of space. A space suit, however, will also trap heat inside the suit. To stabilize an astronaut's body temperature, space suits are equipped with an undergarment containing a network of small tubes held against the body. A chilled liquid is pumped through these tubes, removing the body's heat by heat transfer between the skin and the tubes. These garments are known as liquid-cooled garments (LCG's), but are often referred to as "cool suits." Cool suits are now used in a variety of industrial and military applications.
Known for their expertise with LCG's, NASA scientists continued to refine and adapt this technology for the advancement of biomedical research. These advancements include cooling systems for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, children who suffer from HED (insufficient sweat glands), and those
diagnosed with MS.

MSAA Advances Cooling Technology
As MSAA and NASA continued to expand the science of cooling and MS, both agencies realized the need to pool resources and accelerate the goal of bringing symptom relief to thousands of people with MS. On May 23, 1994, officials from MSAA and NASA signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" to establish a framework for cooperative efforts.
This provided a springboard from which many joint endeavors have been completed. These include national workshops, equipment evaluations, and finally, a national clinical research study funded by NASA, in which MSAA staff played a significant role.

Win an MS Awareness Scarf this week!

March is MS Awareness Month, and there are many ways to show support for people with MS. MS Awareness Week 2015 is March 2nd through 8th. Throughout this week and the entire month, we encourage you to learn more about MS and how you can make a difference. See how you can get involved this month!

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation is continuing their #Orange4MSF #4MSF campaign. Share your support and post a selfie with an orange on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society provides a list of resources and events across the country for those who would like to be involved during March. The NMSS also has a new website to help people to connect and show support for one another; check out MS Connection. Every connection counts!

The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America has many resources for people to learn more about MS. Their blog, MS Conversations, provides many different ways to for people to increase their knowledge, understanding and support of people living with MS.

Use MSAA’s badge as the profile picture on your social media platforms.
Don’t forget to use the hashtag #MSAwareness in your posts!
Show your support with an MS Awareness Cooling Scarf!

One way to help show support is by wearing our “MS Awareness” cooling scarves. These stylish scarves give comfort and relief from the heat.

20% of sales from Polar’s cooling scarves benefit national Multiple Sclerosis non-profits!

Visiting with MSAA

This week Polar’s president Bill is off to visit with the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA). Bill will go meet with Pete Damiri, the Vice President of Programs and Services along with many other fine folks at MSAA. Some of you may remember Pete from our visit to the Christmas Story House in December! MSAA is one of many wonderful non-profit organizations that help to assist people with MS; they provide cooling garments at no cost to people with MS who qualify for financial assistance.

Check back next week as Bill heads down to warm Florida to visit with the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MSF). To learn more about the non-profit cooling programs Polar Products has with both MSAA and MSF, please visit our Non-Profit Cooling Programs web page.

Check out what some of our customers have said about these kits:

“We bought the CoolFit® Kit as a gift for my sister-in-law. She calls us every day to tell us how much she loves it and how many new ways she has found to use all the pieces. This was the best gift ever for someone with MS who lives in a hot, hot climate!”
- Greg in CA

“I am writing to thank you, with all my heart, for the wonderful Kool Max Vest, ice packs, and other cooling items I received from you just a week or so ago. I never could have afforded such items, and I really do know now that I can become more active now with this heat resistance equipment."
