Put Your Brown Adipose Tissue to Work (And Lose Weight!)

By cooling the body to approximately 57°F with our Cool Flow® Heavy-Duty Vest and Arctic Chiller Reservoir System, a Harvard University study found that brown fat - also known as brown adipose tissue - becomes stimulated. Once activated, this brown fat begins to burn calories at a high rate within the body, resulting in weight loss.

Polar Products was directly involved with a research study through the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University and the findings from this study have been recently published in the book The Diabetes Reset, by George L. King, M.D.

Find Polar Products mentioned on page 144.

In The Diabetes Reset, Dr. King writes about a program to help combat Type 2 Diabetes by adopting a regimen of dieting, exercise and activating the body's brown fat. Our Cool Flow® Heavy-Duty Vest and Arctic Chiller Reservoir were used by Harvard University to help determine the benefits of body cooling and activating brown fat in a person's body, and our garments are still being used for research today.

Since this first study from Aaron Cypess, M.D., Ph.D. in May of 2010, Polar Products has worked with numerous other universities and hospitals including Vanderbilt University, John Hopkins Medical Institute and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Click here for a comprehensive list of studies with Polar Products.

Here's what Harvard's Joslin Diabetes Center had to say about our vest:
"We have had great success with your cooling system."
- Lauren Weiner, Joslin Diabetes Center
"We like the cooling vest system so much we're going to order a second one!"
- Aaron Cypess, formerly Joslin Diabetes Center, currently at the National Institutes of Health

The Diabetes Reset also recommends another useful cooling garment from Polar Products: our Kool Max® cooling vests. When used in conjunction with regular diet and exercise, it was found that cooling the body can help assist with weight loss and management of Type 2 diabetes*.

Our most popular Kool Max® garment: the zipper front vest.
It also come in khaki, light blue and pink!

In addition to helping individuals overcome heat sensitivity, our products can also be used to achieve the body temperature shown to help manage weight loss. Polar Products is proud to have our products used for diverse research studies and we continue to be excited to see evidence of the many ways body cooling is beneficial.

Eaten Alive: Cooling Beneath the Snake-Proof Suit

We were so surprised to see one of our custom cooling systems on the Discovery Channel this weekend!

Paul Rosolie, a snake researcher and conservationist, contacted us last spring to request a custom cooling vest to be worn in Peru while filming a show about anacondas.

He failed to mention that the show was called Eaten Alive and that his intention was to be swallowed by a massive anaconda!

The show received many mixed reviews, and we won't spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it. We will say that Paul, the snake and the cooling vest were not harmed during production. (Well, we can't say for certain that the cooling vest wasn't harmed... but we hope it's ok too!)

The suit worn by Paul Rosolie in 'Eaten Alive' (Discovery)

Paul's protective suit was made of multiple layers, each designed to protect against a specific threat:
  • First, Paul wore a biometric vest to enable his team to monitor his heart rate, his respiratory rate and his core body temperature during the action
  • He then added a custom Cool Flow® cooling vest designed by Polar Products (that's us!) to keep him from overheating while inside the snake's body
  • The next layer is a full-body Tyvek hazmat suit to protect against the snake's gastric juices
  • A layer of chainmail-type material to defend him against the snake's fangs
  • Finally, on top of all of that, Paul wore an ultra-strong carbon-fiber shell to defend against crushing constriction

You can watch behind-the-scenes videos about the suit on YahooTVbut here are some of our favorite quotes:

"Here's the cooling vest. That'll keep you cool through the whole thing." - Ron (engineer)

"I am so &$@!ing freezing!" - Paul Rosolie
(Best. Testimonial. Ever.)

"Ok, let me turn the vest up a little." - Dr. Cynthia Bir

"Clearly overheating is not a problem." - Paul

"We're down in the Amazon in June.
You're going to want to stay cool." - Ron

"See these little channels all  through here. There's going to be cool water running through that vest to cool you off." - Ron

"It weighs less than a pound full of water."
- Ron

100 feet of insulated tubing between the vest and the cooling reservoir

We created custom Cool Flow® blanket systems to keep high-def cameras cool while filming The Hobbit in New Zealand, but this was our debut in front of the camera. We're proud to work with individuals to create custom cooling for their very unique applications!

NEW PRODUCT: Cool Flow® Hot/Cold System

The sun is shining and it's a balmy 40 degrees here in Northeast Ohio... we made it through last week's "Polar Vortex" but winter is far from over! We are proud to introduce a new heating vest manufactured by Polar Products...

One of the cooling technologies we manufacture is the Cool Flow® System, with circulates water throughout insulated tubing sewn in a vest or seat cushion. This system is used by surgeons and industrial workers nationwide.

We can customize our products to meet many unique needs, so when Vanderbilt University contacted us for a heating vest system for their research studies, we designed and manufactured the Cool Flow® Hot/Cold Vest System!

Cool Flow® Hot/Cold Vest System

The Cool Flow® Hot/Cold System delivers constant heating OR cooling by continuously circulating water from the cooler through over 50 feet of insulated lines built into the lightweight vest.

Easy to reuse time and time again; simply add ice and water to the cooler to cool down, or turn on the heating element to warm up to 110° F!

Cool Flow® Hot/Cold System(#CFHCS) includes:
  • Comfortable, lightweight vest of your choice, each with built in insulated water lines
  • Water reservoir
  • 5 feet of insulated water lines from the cooler (4 foot extensions also available)
  • High-flow, dry, quick disconnect couplings allow freedom of
    movement if needed.
  • Grounded transformer which plugs into a standard 120v outlet (Lithium Ion Battery Pack also available)
  • Convenient switch to turn heat on or off

Several vest styles from which to choose:

HEAVY-DUTY

Thicker walled tubing and a higher flow rate for heavier use under protective clothing.

ADJUSTABLE

Adjustable straps are perfect to customize the fit either for individuals or use by multiple people.

Performance material has a small amount of stretch to allow for a comfortable, slim fit.

Now you can stay warm OR cool with one vest!
